A Big Jay

A small organisation with deep local roots

A BIG JAY is a small, independent, not-for-profit organisation based in the Ortons area of Peterborough.

Our roots here go back more than 40 years. Over that time we have become involved in a wide variety of property, technology, community and charitable projects — sometimes because something needed organising, sometimes because something had gone wrong, and sometimes simply because somebody needed practical help working out what to do next.

We deliberately remain small. It allows us to take an interest in the individual project rather than applying a standard solution

Why A BIG JAY ?

BIG JAY grew from a simple idea: useful experience, time and practical skills can often make a real difference when they are put to good use.

We are not driven by selling a particular product or service. We become involved where we believe we can genuinely contribute — whether that means resolving a complicated problem, managing something over the longer term, helping a community project or supporting a good cause.

That also means being comfortable saying when something does not need replacing, spending or escalating.

Not For Profit by choice

Being not-for-profit is an important part of how A BIG JAY works.

It gives us the freedom to concentrate on the outcome rather than generating fees or selling unnecessary work. Some activities support themselves, some are provided voluntarily and others generate funds that can be put back into community and charitable causes.

Projects such as Orton Oracle and Redwood Honey are good examples of that approach in practice.

Local, independent and practical

We know the communities in which we work and value long-term relationships with residents, local organisations, charities, contractors and responsible businesses.

We are also independent. Where a project involves several organisations, years of records or competing explanations, we are prepared to work through the detail and establish the position for ourselves.

The aim is usually straightforward: understand the problem, deal with it properly and leave things in a better position than we found them.

Partner with us

A BIG JAY is independent, but that does not mean working alone.

Some of our best work develops through relationships with residents, community organisations, charities, local businesses and other organisations that share an interest in making something work better.

We are always open to sensible partnerships where each organisation can bring something useful to the table while retaining its own identity and independence.

That might include supporting a community project, sharing expertise or resources, helping extend the reach of an existing initiative, or developing something new together.

Orton Oracle, for example, already reaches more than 7,000 homes per edition and provides an established platform for local information. We would welcome conversations with parish councils, community organisations and others interested in working with us to strengthen that resource for the wider Ortons community.

If you think there is something A BIG JAY could contribute to — or something we could achieve better by working together — we would be pleased to hear from you.

Working with A BIG JAY

You do not need to know which service heading your problem fits under before contacting us.

Tell us what is happening. If it is within our experience and something we can usefully contribute to, we will have a conversation about it. If it is not, we will say so.
